"I always felt a deep, unfillable void" – Nawel's story

Nawel was adopted at a young age and raised by a loving family, yet throughout her childhood, she always felt a deep, unfillable void, a sense that something essential was missing. As she grew older and prepared to start her own family, the need to understand her origins became even more pressing. She embarked on a journey to trace her biological parents, hoping to uncover her roots and find a sense of belonging. Through her search, she discovered that her parents had both passed away when she was just a child and that they were skilled rug weavers, a craft that had been passed down through generations.

This revelation sparked something profound in Nawel—a deep connection to her heritage and a desire to honour her parents’ legacy. She made a bold decision to leave behind a promising corporate career, as well as two degrees, to fully embrace the craft her parents had mastered. It was as though the art of weaving was woven into her very being, and soon after, Nawel began to immerse herself in the intricate process of rug making.

Her natural aptitude for the craft was nothing short of extraordinary. Nawel quickly mastered the traditional techniques of rug weaving, while also infusing her own artistic vision into each piece. She blended timeless designs with modern influences, creating pieces that are as much a reflection of her parents’ craftsmanship as they are of her unique, contemporary style.

Each rug she creates tells a story—one of love, loss, and rediscovery. Her work not only honours her parents’ legacy but also bridges the gap between generations, blending the rich history of traditional rug weaving with the vibrancy and innovation of the present day. Nawel’s rugs are not just objects; they are living testaments to her journey of self-discovery, her unwavering commitment to her craft, and her deep respect for the past. Through her creations, she has found a way to honour her roots while simultaneously shaping her own legacy.
